The Story of Little Lamb
By Linda Webb - 2003 This story was inspired by “Watch the Lamb” by Ray Boltz
Little Lamb listened carefully as her mother told her about the very important journey that she was going to take. “Little Lamb, mankind, are sinners, so God choose some special animals to be a sacrifice for their sins and lambs are one of the chosen special animals. It is a great honor to be chosen for this special task, and you Little Lamb, were chosen because you are a prefect little lamb.”
Simon and his sons, Alexander and Rufus walked out to where Little Lamb and her mother were standing. Simon quietly placed a rope around Little Lamb’s neck and led her out of the gate. Little Lamb’s mother watched with tears in her eyes as she watched her only child be led off to be sacrificed for Simon’s family.
As Simon and his sons left Cyrene toward Jerusalem, the boys ask their father many questions. “Daddy, why must we take Little Lamb to the temple to be sacrificed?” Simon told his sons about Moses and Abraham. He told them that because mankind, were sinners God required that they must make sacrifices to atone for their sins. And that God required that only perfect little lambs could be used. And that their job was to watch Little Lamb so she wouldn’t run away. Little Lamb walked a little closer to Rufus when Simon told the boys to watch Little Lamb.
As Simon and the boys came closer to Jerusalem, Simon told the boys to stay close and watch Little Lamb. It will be very crowded today because it is Passover. As soon as they entered the gates of the city, Simon knew something must be very wrong. There wasn’t anyone rejoicing, instead there was an angry mob crying “crucify him.”
Simon and his sons tried to leave the city, but it was very crowded. “Why, are these men so angry, father?” ask Alexander. “Because they think this man, Jesus, said some bad things.” Simon replied. Little Lamb stood next to Alexander and Rufus as they watched the people around them.
Suddenly the man named Jesus fell to his knees, right in front of Little Lamb, he was badly beaten and had a crown of thorns on his head. Jesus looked up at Little Lamb and those around him. A Roman guard pointed to Simon and said, “YOU! Carry his cross.” At first Simon tried to refuse, but when the Roman guard reached for his sword, Simon handed the rope to Alexander and said watch the lamb. As Simon lifted the cross to his shoulder, a drop of blood fell on Little Lamb’s head.
As Simon and the others climbed up Golgotha, Little Lamb got scared. She remembered how Simon and her mom said she had to be perfect, and now she had blood on her pure white wool. Little Lamb pulled away and ran as fast as she could. Alexander and Rufus tried to find Little Lamb, but they were pushed up the hill to where their father was. As they approached their father with tears in their eyes, they saw their father on his knees crying. “Father please forgive us, Little Lamb ran away.” Alexander said. “Father what are we seeing here?” asked Rufus. Simon took the boys into his arms and turned toward the cross and said “Watch the Lamb.” as he pointed to the cross.
As they watched Jesus Christ, they heard him pray, “Father forgive them,”and then he died. Little Lamb walked up to where Simon, Alexander and Rufus stood. Simon reached down and picked up Little Lamb and said, “Today, Little Lamb, you will be called Grace, for today another Lamb died in your place. Behold, the Lamb, Jesus Christ that taketh away, the sins of the world
